Whole House Water Filters
A whole house filter treats water where it enters the building, ahead of the water heater and every fixture downstream. That placement is what separates it from a filter at a single tap. Showers, laundry, the kitchen sink, and the ice maker all draw from water that has already passed through the system, so the treatment reaches the whole house rather than one faucet. For a household on a well, or on a municipal line that runs heavy with chlorine or rust, that is often the practical place to solve the problem rather than treating tap after tap.
Cartridges in this category handle sediment and taste. Sediment cartridges trap the sand, silt, rust, and scale that break loose in wells and aging service lines. Carbon cartridges are designed to reduce chlorine taste and odor and the flat, chemical character chlorine leaves in drinking water and in laundry. Many systems run both in sequence, sediment first so the carbon is not clogged by grit, and some add a stage for iron or hardness where the supply calls for it. What a given cartridge is designed to reduce is stated on its product page.
Sizing is the first thing to check. Whole house cartridges come in standard diameter and in the large diameter Big Blue format, in common lengths of ten and twenty inches, and the cartridge has to match the housing already mounted on the line. A larger housing holds more media, which generally means longer intervals between changes and less pressure drop across the filter, and pressure drop matters on a line feeding an entire house. The housing model is usually printed on the sump or the cap, and the cartridge dimensions are listed on every product page, so the two can be checked against each other before anything is ordered.
Whole house cartridges are consumables. A loaded sediment filter announces itself as falling pressure at the fixtures, and spent carbon announces itself as the taste of chlorine coming back. Replacement intervals depend on the incoming water and on household demand, so start from what the manufacturer suggests for that cartridge and adjust based on what the system actually does. A subscribe and save plan keeps replacement cartridges arriving on schedule, which is the simplest way to keep a whole house system from running well past its interval.
