UV Lamps and Bulbs

Ultraviolet lamps treat water without chemicals. Water flows through a chamber around a quartz sleeve, the lamp inside emits ultraviolet light, and that exposure disrupts the ability of bacteria and other microorganisms to reproduce. Nothing is added to the water and nothing is strained out of it, which makes UV a final stage in a system rather than a standalone answer.

That last point shapes how UV systems get built. Ultraviolet light has to reach an organism to affect it, so anything that clouds the water or shields a particle cuts the dose. Water carrying heavy sediment, iron, or organic material needs mechanical filtration ahead of the UV chamber. On a well supply, a sediment cartridge and often a carbon stage sit upstream for exactly this reason.

Lamps are matched by length, by pin configuration, and by the wattage the system was designed around, so the part number on the old lamp or in the system manual is the reference to work from. Quartz sleeves are separate components and are worth inspecting whenever a lamp is changed, since scale or film on the sleeve blocks output just as effectively as cloudy water does.

UV lamps lose output long before they go dark. A lamp that still glows can be delivering far less ultraviolet energy than the system was designed around, which is why replacement runs on a schedule rather than on failure. Manufacturers state a service life for each lamp, so check the manual for the system in question, and keeping a spare on the shelf avoids leaving a system running unprotected.
