Bosch refrigerators filter the water that feeds the door dispenser and the ice maker, and that filtration depends on a cartridge meant to be changed. The factory cartridges use carbon block media, the standard choice for improving the taste and the smell of drinking water and ice without changing anything about how the appliance runs.

The Bosch UltraClarity cartridge is the common factory replacement across much of the Bosch refrigerator range. Like other carbon block cartridges, it is designed to reduce particulate matter, turbidity, and chlorine, the three things most responsible for cloudy ice and a chemical edge in the taste of the water.

Filters compatible with the Bosch Sanitary Quick-Change system are also available. The 3M AquaPure cartridge is designed to fit Bosch refrigerators and uses an activated carbon block rated at 5 microns, fine enough to hold back sediment while the carbon works on chlorine. Flow through these cartridges runs at roughly half a gallon per minute, which fills a glass or an ice tray without a wait.

Bosch refrigerator cartridges are typically rated for up to six months of service, though the manual for a specific model is the place to confirm that, and hard water or heavy dispenser use can shorten the window. Both styles seat and twist into place without tools, so a change takes a minute at the front of the refrigerator. A subscribe and save plan keeps the next cartridge arriving before the old one is spent, which means the swap happens the day the indicator light comes on rather than a month later.
