GE Water Filters and Accessories

General Electric builds refrigerators, dispensers, and filtration equipment for the home, and most of that equipment relies on a replaceable cartridge to keep the water it delivers clean and neutral tasting. This collection covers GE water filters and the accessories that go with them, including cartridges for refrigerators with in door dispensers and ice makers.

These filters are consumable parts. The carbon media inside a cartridge is designed to reduce chlorine taste and odor along with sediment and other common impurities found in treated municipal water, and that media has a finite capacity. Once it is exhausted the filter no longer does much, even though water still flows through it, which is why replacement is a maintenance item rather than a repair. A cartridge left in place well past its rating is doing little more than taking up room in the housing.

Fit is determined by the appliance, not by the shape of the cartridge alone. GE has used several filter designs across its refrigerator lines, including GE Profile models, so a cartridge that seats correctly in one unit will not necessarily seat in another. The owner's manual for the refrigerator lists the exact replacement part, and the model number on the appliance tag confirms it. Checking that number before ordering is the single step that prevents a mismatch.

Installation is straightforward on most models. The cartridge either twists into a housing inside the fresh food compartment or slides into a bay behind the base grille, and the appliance manual gives the sequence. After a new filter is seated, running several gallons through the dispenser clears trapped air and loose carbon fines, and resetting the filter indicator light starts the timer over.

Replacement intervals vary with the model and with how much water a household draws. Most manufacturers suggest changing a refrigerator cartridge roughly twice a year or at a rated gallon capacity, whichever comes first, so check the manual for the figure that applies. A change in taste or odor, or a dispenser that has slowed noticeably, is a practical sign the cartridge is due. Keeping a spare on hand shortens the gap between noticing that change and fixing it.
