Ceramic Filters and Candles

A ceramic filter element, often called a candle, is the working core of a gravity fed water filtration system. Water sits in an upper chamber and passes slowly through the porous ceramic wall into the chamber below. There is no pump and no plumbing connection, which is why gravity systems turn up in homes with unreliable supply lines, in cabins, and in emergency preparedness kits.

The filtering happens at the surface of the ceramic and through the wall itself. The pore structure is fine enough that sediment and larger organisms are held on the outside of the candle while water works its way through. Ceramic elements in this category are designed to reduce bacteria such as E. coli, salmonella, and cholera organisms, along with sediment, rust, and cloudiness. Many candles carry a core of activated carbon inside the ceramic shell, which addresses chlorine taste and odor and some of the dissolved compounds that ceramic alone does not catch.

Ceramic carries a maintenance routine that other media do not. The outer surface can usually be brushed clean under running water once flow slows, which restores much of the original rate and stretches the working life of the element. Manufacturers typically state that life in gallons or in months, and a candle should be retired once the wall has been scrubbed thin or the stated life has passed.
