Inline Water Filters

An inline water filter is a sealed cartridge that installs directly on the water line rather than inside a separate housing. The line feeds into one end, filtered water leaves the other, and the whole cartridge is replaced when it is spent. Most are found on the supply line running to a refrigerator, an ice maker, or a drinking water faucet, which makes them one of the simplest ways to treat only the water a household actually drinks.

Inline filters in this category are designed to reduce chlorine taste and odor along with sediment, rust particles, and the fine grit that travels through household plumbing. Cutting the chlorine is what most people notice first, in the water and in the ice, since ice made from unfiltered water carries that taste into whatever it is chilling. Coffee, tea, and cooking water benefit for the same reason, and so does the water bowl the dog drinks from.

Sizing and fittings determine fit. Inline cartridges come in different lengths and diameters, with quick connect or compression fittings sized to common water line tubing. Smaller inline filters are made for RVs, campers, and boats, where there is little room on the line and the water source changes from stop to stop. Installation is usually a matter of shutting off the supply, disconnecting the line, and seating the new cartridge in the same direction as the flow arrow printed on the body. Most changes take a few minutes and no special tools. Service life varies with water quality and how much water moves through the line, and manufacturers commonly rate these cartridges from several months up to a year, so check what the maker suggests for the model you install.
