Kitchen Garbage Disposals

A garbage disposal grinds food scraps at the sink drain so they leave with the wastewater instead of sitting in a trash bag. That means less to carry to the curb and a cleaner sink, particularly in kitchens where cooking happens most nights of the week. Food waste that would otherwise sit in the bin overnight goes down the drain instead, which also keeps odors down.

Disposals come in two feed styles. Continuous feed units run while the switch is on, so scraps can be fed in as the sink is cleared. Batch feed units run only when a stopper is seated in the drain opening, which adds a layer of safety in a household with children. Both styles handle the same everyday kitchen waste; the difference is how the unit is operated.

Two measurements guide the choice. The first is the space under the sink, since the disposal has to clear the cabinet, the trap, and any dishwasher connection. The second is motor horsepower, which tracks with how much waste a household produces. A small kitchen is usually served well by a lighter unit, while a large family running the disposal several times a day is better matched to a higher horsepower motor that grinds tougher scraps without stalling.

Units from established appliance manufacturers, including Waste King, GE, and KitchenAid, cover the common horsepower ratings and mounting styles. Beyond horsepower, the details that separate models are the grinding components, how well the shell is insulated against noise, and whether the unit includes an anti-jam feature.

Most disposals mount to a standard sink flange, so a replacement often reuses the existing plumbing. Even so, the mounting assembly, the drain height, and the electrical connection should be checked against the old unit before the swap, and a dishwasher drain line needs a matching inlet on the new disposal. Checking those points first keeps a straightforward swap from turning into a plumbing project.
