Water Filter Housings
A filter housing is the part of a filtration system that does not get thrown away. It holds the cartridge inside the water line, seals against line pressure, and directs flow through the media instead of around it. A housing that is cracked, clouded, or no longer sealing is worth replacing on its own, because even a new cartridge cannot do its job inside a housing that leaks or bypasses.
Housings in this category come in a few distinct forms:
- Membrane housings that hold a reverse osmosis membrane
- Pressure vessels sized for larger cartridges and higher flow
- Hubs and heads that mount the assembly and carry the inlet and outlet ports
Sizing is the part worth slowing down for. A housing has to match the length and the diameter of the cartridge, the port thread size on the existing plumbing, and the pressure the line will actually see. Industry standard sizes cover most residential systems, while some manufacturers use a housing shaped only for their own cartridges, and those are not interchangeable with a standard sump.
Material and pressure rating matter as much as the fit. Clear sump housings make it easy to see how loaded a cartridge is without opening anything, while opaque housings keep light off the media, which discourages algae growth on a line that runs through a bright space. Housings rated for higher pressure suit a main line, and lighter duty housings are meant for a point of use position downstream of a shutoff.
The o-ring deserves the same attention as the housing itself, since the seal is what keeps a housing dry under pressure and a flattened or dried out o-ring will weep long before the plastic fails. A sump wrench sized to the housing makes a cartridge change straightforward instead of a wrestling match, and mounting brackets hold the assembly steady so the weight of a full sump is not hanging on the plumbing. Confirm the model number stamped on the existing housing before ordering a replacement, and shut off the supply and release the pressure in the line before opening anything.
