A whole house system, also called a point of entry system, is installed on the main line where water comes into a home. Everything downstream draws from filtered water: every bathroom, the kitchen, the laundry, and the water heater. Some systems also call for supporting components, a pressure regulator among them, so the specifications on each system state what it requires and what it is designed for. Installation is within reach of a confident do-it-yourselfer on many models, though the main line has to be shut off and a bypass is worth planning for so cartridge changes do not mean cutting water to the house.
