Doulton Ceramic Water Filters

Doulton builds ceramic water filter candles and cartridges for countertop, under sink, and other point of use drinking water systems. The ceramic shell handles the first stage of filtration, catching fine particles and other suspended matter as water passes through the wall of the candle.

Inside the ceramic, an activated carbon core carries the next stage. Models such as the Ultracarb add further media so that water moves through several stages in sequence, with each stage aimed at a different class of contaminant. Filters in this category are designed to reduce sediment, chlorine taste and odor, and other impurities that affect how drinking water tastes and smells.

One reason ceramic remains popular is that it filters without stripping the water of the minerals that give it body and flavor. The result is clear water that carries no aftertaste, which is what most households are after when they move away from bottled water. The pore structure of the ceramic is also designed to resist the growth of bacteria on the filter surface.

Ceramic candles have one practical advantage over disposable cartridges: the outer surface can be cleaned. When flow slows, the accumulated sediment on the ceramic can usually be brushed off and the candle returned to service, which extends its working life. Manufacturers still set a limit on how long a candle should stay in use, so check the instructions supplied with the system.

Sizing comes down to the candle length and mount type that the housing accepts, so match the model number on the existing candle before ordering. Countertop units keep the filter visible and within reach in the kitchen, while under sink models keep it out of sight. A subscribe and save plan keeps a fresh candle arriving on schedule, which takes the guesswork out of a maintenance step that is easy to forget.
