Pleated polyester filters are sediment cartridges built for capacity. Rather than a smooth cylinder, the media is folded into pleats, which packs far more filtering surface into the same housing. More surface means more room to hold dirt before flow starts to drop, so a pleated cartridge generally runs longer between changes than a flat surface filter of the same size.

Polyester is the reason these cartridges hold up. The fiber resists the chemicals and the breakdown that shorten the life of other media, and it keeps its shape when wet, so the pleats stay open and the cartridge keeps working at its rated flow. Many pleated polyester filters can be rinsed clean and put back into service several times before they are retired, which suits well water and any supply that runs heavy with sediment.
