The line splits broadly into sediment cartridges and carbon cartridges. Sediment cartridges are rated in microns and are designed to reduce particulate matter such as dirt, rust, silt, and sand, with a lower micron rating capturing finer particles. Carbon cartridges, in wound, granular, and solid block forms, are designed to reduce chlorine taste and odor, chloramine, and other impurities that affect how water tastes and smells. Sizing is the part that has to be right. Cartridges are made in set lengths and diameters so they seat inside a matching housing, which means the housing on the wall or under the sink determines what fits, regardless of what the water needs. Measuring the old cartridge, or reading the size printed on it, is the quickest way to confirm a replacement before ordering.

In many systems a sediment cartridge is installed ahead of a carbon cartridge. The sediment stage takes out the coarse material first, which keeps the finer carbon stage from loading up early and lets each element work through its intended life. Systems built with two or three housings in series usually follow exactly that logic.

Service life depends on the cartridge, on the flow through it, and on how much sediment the incoming water carries, so check the manual for the interval the manufacturer suggests.
