MERV 13 is the highest filtration rating a standard residential furnace or air conditioner is built to take. Under ASHRAE 52.2 testing a MERV 13 filter captures at least half of the particles in the 0.3 to 1.0 micron range, which is where smoke, bacteria and the finest dust live, and 90 percent or more of everything from 1 to 10 microns, the range that covers pollen, pet dander and mold spores. That is the rating to choose for a household with allergies or asthma, or an office where the air handler runs all day.
