Carbon Block Water Filters

Carbon block is one of the most widely used designs in residential water filtration. Instead of loose granular carbon, the media is compressed into a solid block, which gives water far more contact with the carbon surface as it passes through. That contact time is what makes the cartridge effective.

Water is forced through the compressed carbon, and the structure of the block holds back sediment while the carbon itself takes up many of the dissolved compounds that affect taste and odor. Filters in this category are designed to reduce chlorine taste and odor along with other common organic contaminants, and the tighter the block, the finer the particles it can capture. Micron ratings are stated on individual cartridges, and a lower number means a tighter filter.

Carbon block cartridges appear throughout the home. They sit in under sink systems, countertop units, whole house housings, refrigerator lines, and the polishing stages of reverse osmosis systems. Because so many systems accept them, matching the cartridge to the housing matters more than matching the brand. Confirm the length and the diameter of the cartridge the system takes, then check the micron rating and the end cap style before ordering.

Carbon has a finite capacity. Once the media is loaded, flow can slow and taste can return, which is the signal that a cartridge has reached the end of its service life. Most manufacturers suggest a replacement interval measured in months or in gallons treated, so check the manual for the system in question.
