Poseidon Filters Buying Guide: Which Filter Is Right for Your System?

Apr 22

Clean water is not something you want to think about every day. You want to turn on the tap, fill a glass, and know the water is doing what water is supposed to do. The filter is the part that makes that quiet reliability possible, and picking the right one means matching the filter to your specific system and your specific water.

This guide walks through the Poseidon Filters lineup and helps you find the right filter for what you have at home. Whether that is a refrigerator filter, a whole-house system, an under-sink unit, or an air filtration need, the fit matters more than the brand name on the box.

Start With Your System

The single most important step in choosing a replacement filter is knowing what you have. Brand name alone is not enough. The specific model of the existing filter or the system it feeds is what determines compatibility.

Three ways to find this out:

Check the existing filter. The model number is printed on the cartridge body. This is the authoritative answer.

Check the system it feeds. If you have an under-sink system, the model number is on the housing head or the manifold. If it is a refrigerator filter, the fridge user manual specifies the compatible filter.

Photo the system or the existing filter. If model numbers are not clear, our team can usually identify from a photo. Reach out at info@poseidonfilters.com with images.

Once you know the model, the rest of the process is straightforward.

Refrigerator Filter Categories

Most refrigerator filters fall into a handful of categories based on the fridge brand:

Everpure compatible filters. For Everpure under-sink and drinking water systems, Poseidon carries compatible cartridges including H-300 and H-1200 equivalents. Premium precoat-style filtration for households where water quality is a priority.

GE MWF and related. The most common refrigerator filter in the US. Poseidon compatible options are NSF certified and match GE's contaminant reduction profile.

LG LT1000P and related. For newer LG French door fridges. Compatible options carry NSF 42 and NSF 53 certifications.

Whirlpool family filters. Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Amana, and JennAir fridges use the same filter families. Compatible options available.

Samsung DA29 series. For Samsung French door refrigerators.

Bosch, Frigidaire, and specialty. Less common brands with specific filter models. Poseidon compatible options available for most major systems.

For any fridge filter, the key points are compatibility (does it actually fit the housing and seal properly) and certification (NSF 42 at minimum, NSF 53 preferred).

Under-Sink and RO System Filters

Under-sink water filtration systems range from simple single-stage carbon filters to multi-stage reverse osmosis systems with pre-filters, membranes, and post-filters.

Single-stage carbon under-sink systems. Replace the single cartridge every 6 to 12 months depending on system rating and water quality.

Multi-stage under-sink (sediment + carbon + specialty). Each stage replaces on its own schedule. Sediment and carbon typically every 6 months. Specialty stages (fluoride reduction, specific contaminant removal) every 6 to 12 months.

Reverse osmosis systems. Sediment pre-filter and carbon pre-filter every 6 months. RO membrane every 2 to 3 years. Post-filter every 6 to 12 months depending on system.

Whole-house systems. Capacity is much higher than under-sink. Replacement intervals run 3 to 12 months for sediment and carbon, longer for specialty cartridges.

The right schedule is in your system's documentation. Replacing on schedule is not optional. A filter past its rated life starts releasing captured contaminants back into the water.

Air Filtration Options

Poseidon carries air filtration products alongside water filters, because clean air is part of the same health-conscious picture.

MERV 11 HVAC filters. Good general-purpose air filtration. Captures dust, pollen, mold spores, and particulates down to 3 microns.

MERV 13 HVAC filters. Higher efficiency. Captures smaller particles including bacteria, smoke, and many airborne pathogens. Best for households with allergies, respiratory conditions, or pet allergens.

Air purifier filters. Replacement filters for standalone air purifier units. Compatibility depends on specific purifier model.

For HVAC filters, size matters more than brand. The filter has to fit the exact dimensions of the HVAC return. Common sizes include 16x20x1, 20x25x1, 16x25x4, and many others.

What to Look For in Any Filter

Across every category, a few things matter more than brand name.

NSF certification. NSF 42 is the minimum (taste and odor reduction). NSF 53 adds health-contaminant certification (cysts, lead, VOCs). NSF 401 addresses emerging contaminants (pharmaceuticals, pesticides).

Capacity rating. Every filter has a rated capacity in gallons, hours of use, or time (whichever comes first). Understand the rating so you replace on schedule.

Fit confirmation. For replacement filters, physical fit matters as much as performance. A well-performing filter that does not seal properly in the housing is not a working filter.

Materials. Activated carbon (coconut shell is typically higher quality than bituminous), micron rating on sediment filters, membrane specifications on RO.

Source. Buying direct from a specialist filter retailer typically beats big-box retail by 15 to 40 percent for comparable product.

Subscribe and Save

Poseidon offers a subscribe-and-save option for most replacement filter categories. The benefits are practical, not promotional:

  • Filters arrive on your replacement schedule automatically
  • Discount on every order versus one-time purchase
  • No reminders, no forgetting, no water that is not being filtered because the replacement is sitting in someone's cart

For households that have a consistent filter replacement need (anyone with an RO system, any fridge filter), the subscription saves money and removes a recurring chore.

Cancellation is available at any time. Shipping schedules can be adjusted to match actual usage.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Filters

A few patterns come up often enough to flag.

Buying by brand without confirming the specific model. A fridge labeled Samsung may take a Samsung DA29 filter, a Samsung HAF filter, or in some cases a Samsung-branded cartridge manufactured by a third party. Model number is the authoritative compatibility reference.

Assuming aftermarket is always inferior. Quality aftermarket filters with NSF certification often match OEM performance at lower cost. The issue is that not all aftermarket filters are equal. Certified, reviewed aftermarket is a legitimate choice. Uncertified generic aftermarket is not.

Ignoring the replacement schedule. The most common filter failure is not product defect. It is a filter left in service past its rated life. Replace on schedule.

Buying a filter without confirming water quality needs. A basic carbon filter does not remove fluoride. A sediment filter does not remove chlorine. Matching the filter's actual capabilities to the water's actual contaminants is how you get what you need.

Chasing the cheapest option for critical filtration. For a household with known contaminant concerns (lead, pharmaceuticals, cysts), buying the cheapest uncertified filter defeats the point of having a filter at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which filter fits my system? Check the model number on the existing filter first. If no filter is present, check the system documentation or the model label on the fridge or housing. Model number determines compatibility.

What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket filters? OEM filters are manufactured by or licensed from the appliance manufacturer. Aftermarket filters are produced by third parties. Quality aftermarket with NSF certification often matches OEM performance at lower cost. Uncertified aftermarket varies in quality.

How often should I replace my water filter? Refrigerator filters every 6 months or per manufacturer rating. Under-sink pre-filters every 6 months. RO membranes every 2 to 3 years. HVAC filters every 1 to 3 months depending on household and rating.

What does NSF certification mean? NSF 42 certifies taste and odor reduction. NSF 53 certifies health-contaminant reduction including cysts and lead. NSF 401 certifies emerging contaminants. Higher certification numbers address more categories.

How does Poseidon's subscribe-and-save work? Pick your filter and replacement schedule. Filters arrive automatically on that schedule at a discount versus one-time purchase. Cancellation and schedule adjustment available at any time.
